What a Good Deal Actually Looks Like And Why Most People Get It Wrong

May 04, 2026

Most people think getting the lowest price means they got a good deal.

That’s what they’ve been taught.

Negotiate hard. Push back. Win the deal.

But after more than 30 years in this business, I can tell you that mindset is exactly where people go wrong.

When I started back in 1994, there was no internet, no online pricing, no shortcuts.

People relied on the person sitting across from them and one thing mattered more than anything else.

Trust.

Over time, I saw the same pattern play out again and again.

Customers would focus on one number, price

Thinking that was the entire deal.

It never was.

The reality is simple

A good deal isn’t about price, it's about total cost.

There’s a big difference between what you pay and what it actually costs you to own the vehicle. That includes

  • Purchase price
  • Financing structure
  • Depreciation
  • Maintenance and repairs
  • Reliability

I’ve seen it thousands of times.

Two vehicles:

  • One cheaper upfront, but constant problems
  • One slightly more expensive, but reliable and holds value

The second one almost always wins.

But most people never look at it that way.

Then there’s the monthly payment.

This is where things really get confusing.

A lower payment feels like a win but it doesn’t mean it is. Payments can be adjusted

  • Longer terms
  • Different rates
  • Lease vs finance
  • Open-end structures

So the numbers look better

but the deal isn’t.

You don’t choose a vehicle based on payment. You choose based on your situation.

Here’s the part no one really talks about.

The trade-in.

A customer says:

“I want more for my trade.”

And the dealership says:

“No problem.”

They increase the trade value.

Customer feels like they won.

But behind the scenes

  • The price of the new vehicle goes up
  • The structure changes
  • The numbers shift

The deal looks better but it isn’t.

Because

It’s not about what you get for your trade.

It’s about the entire transaction.

That’s where people get caught.

Most people aren’t making bad decisions because they’re careless.

They’re making them because they don’t have clarity.

They are

  • Focused on one number
  • Emotionally invested
  • Overloaded with information
  • Trying to win instead of understand

And if you don’t understand the deal it’s probably not a good one. So what does a good deal actually look like?

It’s simple.

It’s a vehicle that

  • Fits your life
  • Is structured properly
  • Holds value
  • Doesn’t create problems down the road
  • You aren’t locked in for an extended term

No pressure. No tricks. No guessing.

Just a decision that makes sense.

That’s exactly why I created

Drive Concierge

Not to replace dealerships but to remove the confusion around the process. To help people

  • See the full picture
  • Understand their options
  • Make the right decision the first time

Because at the end of the day

The best deal isn’t the cheapest one.

It’s the one that actually makes sense
